love the game but it can stagnate - what does the water do? anything?

what does the water/stream/fountain in the middle of the map do? I was really hoping if I hung out there i could pray and make it rain or something - all resources were wiped out and one powerful enemy was just too strong, killed 3 tribes while idle.

Pretty sure as if right now it does...............NOTHING!
